In the studio with Joel Levi

DSC_5136B

If they haven’t already, your ears need to be graced by the midwestern bliss that is Joel Levi‘s melodies. Joel is a phenomenal singer/songwriter from Anderson, Indiana who plays with an extremely gifted group of gents. I was happy to help them capture the process as I spent an evening hanging out with these talented guys as they recorded for the upcoming record. They used Eddie Prather’s studio, minorProphet. As you will see, the studio in itself is entirely picturesque and Eddie was such a perfect host.

The talent includes:

Joel Levi, Andrew Camp, Bradford Dobbs, & Andrew Frank with a guest appearance on the keys by Matt Ulrich.

Producers: Alex Dobbert & Steven Berghoff

Enjoy!

\\ Bitter and Sweet

Bitter & Sweet

Hi guys.  Hope this finds you well!  I have been dreading posting this piece of information for a while now, but here goes nothin’… As of now, and until further notice, I am not able to book weddings.  As sad as this makes me, there is a valid reason and an exciting alternative.  Let me explain…

In just a few short weeks I will be graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree from IU School of Nursing here in Indianapolis.  I’ve worked really hard for this, and although I will never be able to say which passion I love more (because I never will be able to choose) it’s time for me to really focus on being the best nurse I can be.  After all, lives depend on it (no pressure.)  After graduation I will be pursuing a career in emergency medicine, where I have found to be my place thanks to the wonderful opportunities provided to me by IUSON.  When working at a hospital, schedules are unpredictable and asking off for multiple weekends is not necessarily feasible.  That being said, I do not want to enter into contracts with couples without knowing if I will actually be available on their special days.  I know for a fact I will do weddings again someday, when my schedule is more stable.  Thank you to all the couples who have allowed me to be a part of their stories for the past few years!  I cannot tell you how much I loved it and appreciated you all.  I cannot wait to start it back up again, and I am so excited to start this new chapter of my life as an RN as well.

NOW.  As for that ‘exciting alternative’ i mentioned… I am not done photographing, period.  I will definitely be doing smaller projects, such as portrait sessions.  I am really interested in working with other creatives in different fields.  Starting a business?  I want to help you get your story out there.  So, do not hesitate to inquire on session possibilities!

Stay tuned, and my sincerest “thank you” for being along for the ride thus far.

Truly,

- Katie.

“…Force fed instead of the most beautiful architecture.”

One year ago I posted about my first trip to the smokies. Here I am again. This trip seemingly lands at specific life changes. The mountains always relate to different obstacles or markers approaching in the near future. This time? Adult hood. In the same breath, I have to say that I am way more content with the new path that is laid before me, and I’m more confident in trusting in that same heavenly Dad that was mentioned prior. I’ve got my hiking boots on this go-around, and I’m ready to soar.

truly,

- Katie.

“Don’t let your name get intermingled with the number cause its time to awaken from the devilish slumber,
to freely follow the Forerunner
to the fatherland and rally round the renaissance man
and the wisdom of His ways
and all the work of His hands
catch come as catch can
concentrating on the good words of the Son of Man,
the plan is to withstand the demands of a confused oppressor:
a wolf in sheep’s clothes
with monotonous lectures
and questionable gestures
unequal measures
cultural pressures
and synthetic textures
force fed instead of the most beautiful architecture
of our long lost, forgotten origins:
Unseen fiber in the blood of my King
And that old rock where we confessed our sins”

Proj2blog

Sometimes I see an image in my mind, just for a split second, and I have to make it happen.  A few weeks back, I was sitting in my apartment relaxing before I went to bed.  No one was home at the time and just before I was about to shut off my music and shut my eyes, I got an idea.  I saw a still of a woman in the air, who looked like a ballerina but her hair was down.  Instead of the typical ballet ensemble I saw this colorful skirt flowing, and that was it.  I’m sure the idea came from somewhere in the back of my mind.  Somewhere which I had placed different things I had seen recently or long ago, jumbled them up, and then pulled it out into the form of an idea.  Long story short, there was no ballerina-esque individual hanging around my living quarters at the time, so I took matters into my own hands. Insert apologies here.  I went into my closet and found the flowiest (word?) skirt I own, and experimented with a little off-camera flash / jumping self-portraits.  I’m sure it would have been quite the sight if anyone had been a fly on the wall, I imagined it looked incredibly silly.  However, sometimes, you just have to go with your gut, and end up looking like an utter fool.

Proj6blog

In my mind I saw a blank white background, but honestly, I did not feel like going through Photoshop and editing out everything that didn’t fit that description.  I kind of adore imperfections and everything that is random lately…. (hint, notice my flash in the corner and obnoxiously large and distracting frame.)

Also, don’t hold my lack of coordination against me.

…or do.

Proj3blog

This kind of story-telling is different than my usual posts, but I like it.  It’s what started this interest of mine.  Making these allowed me to think up my own background for each different picture AFTER capturing them.  It allowed me to let my imagination keep flowing even after the shutter released.  It allowed me to pause a story with a “…” instead of a definite ending.  Each time I look, I see something different, and life can be okay that way.

Let’s face it.  The photography market in the land of the world wide web is overwhelming, to say the least.  What makes each individual photographer’s work stand out?  Sometimes, its hard to tell the difference in photographers’ individual styles.  There are a lot of beautifully talented people in the field, and each fit more perfectly with certain clients than others.  So, I’ll show you a little more about my work and perspective,  and cross my fingers that it matches up with your dreams for you special day.  ;)

Drum roll please…

\\FAMILY: LaBrecque

\\ 09. 18. 2012

Meet the LaBrecque family – Marty, Hayley & Isaac.

If I were to use cliche phrases like “soul sister”… That’s the kind of phrase I would use to describe Hayley.  We work together, we’ve gotten through nursing school so far and the struggles of life in general, and she’s one of my dearest friends.  Thankfully, she met Marty who changed her last name JUST so she could sit next to me at our graduation from IUSON in May, right Marty? I thought so.  These 3 make a beautiful family who I adore immensely, and Isaac may or may not be my favorite (sorry guys.)  :)

We spent the afternoon avoiding the mud and playing in the leaves at the IMA gardens, and I think we all had just as much fun as Isaac did!  Enjoy the photographs, and thanks for spending the day with me, LaBrecque’s!

Their very own GQ model

Isaac helped me with this shot!

Thanks you guys!  Enjoy.

truly,

- katie.

\\ PORTAITS: Kasper family yearly photos.

\\ 10. 06. 12

Remember this little guy, pictured here?

He’s a year older now!

This autumn photo-shoot took place in their very own personal stomping grounds; a little place called Fountain Square.  Perfect location for them, perfect location for this time of year, and a lovely time it was.  I’m honored to have taken this awesome family’s family portraits for the past 3 years.  Seeing Auggie grow and never lose his hyper-ness has been awesome, I love that little man.  Enjoy, Kaspers!

Hot mama!

“We are the founding fathers of ft. square” is what I hear when I look at the above photograph.

Tebow?

Thank you Kaspers! + cheers to Mama-Kasper for wearing my favorite kind of garment – bright jeans!

truly,

- katie.

\\MARRIED: Danielle + Ezra

Meet Danielle + Ezra. Such a goofy, fun, go-lucky, and happy couple. They both come from awesome and hilarious families, who made me feel welcome the entire time I spent getting to know them. Yes, even though Ezra and his brother joked and told everyone I threw my “big ol’ camera at their heads to get the shot.” (I told you they were funny.)

They got married on Danielle’s grandparent’s property, and it was perfect. Wonderful lighting and sceneries for portraits. Such an intimate and beautiful setting for them, while still having hints of Danielle’s vibrant personality all over. Pink + Zebra ladies and gentlemen, and it fit her perfectly. Their families and friends put things together so nicely, especially the wedding coordinator Cicily Allen- AWESOME job guys!

They did not see each other before the ceremony, however we did manage to get some photos together without Ezra sneaking a peak beforehand.

These girls made capturing moments a little too easy.

Pretty sure they were all being silly and/or making fun of me in this shot, but it still turned out cool – good job gents!

Love the shoes.

\

beautiful girls!

One stylish ring-bearer

3 generations. I absolutely love this shot.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to both the Rusie and the Davis families, + a big congratulations and best wishes to Ezra and Danielle.

truly,

- katie.

\\ Keep it “small town”… Keep it personal.

\\ 07. 17. 2012

AYO.

Being a “small business owner;” (key word, small) it’s nice to add home-made personal touches to people that choose you for their big day, despite your lack of a big reputation. That being said, I’m really excited about this random idea I had for my clients’ DVDs of images… For this example, I picked an image from their day that would make a lovely silhouette, and printed it on cardstock paper. Simple as that! Not too fancy or flashy, but that’s the way I like it, and I’m a fan of how they turned out. :) Here’s one example:

\\ Step 1: a quick Illustrator/photoshop sketch-a-roo…

Image

\\ Step 2: Print, + slide.

Image

\\ Step 3: add those simple touches!

Image

\\ Step 4: Sending time… to infinity + beyond!

Image

Don’t be afraid to try new things!

- katie.
